Within the role the Pal-Think institution practises in empowering youth of both sexes and strengthening their awareness and knowledge in the various fields and issues, the civic-education body at Pal-Think for Strategic Studies carried out an awareness workshop titled “Gender-based violence”, at the Arab College of Applied Sciences in the Rafah governorate, with the attendance of a number of the college's male and female students.
This comes within the project “Preparing a Civic Educator”, implemented by Pal-Think for Strategic Studies with funding from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
The meeting was led by the student Aya Khafaja, the student Kifah Salem, and the student Haneen Lulu, who in turn spoke on the concept of gender, then clarifying the difference between the concept of sex and the concept of gender, and setting out gender roles — in addition to talk on the concept of gender-based violence, the kinds of gender-based violence, and the mechanisms of dealing with cases of gender-based violence.
There was likewise talk on the causes and effects of gender-based violence and the ecological model of the factors tied to it.
The meeting's facilitators likewise reviewed some of the legal texts contained in the Palestinian laws that take up the issues of gender-based violence, then put these texts forward for discussion in order to evaluate the extent of their effectiveness in treating the issues of gender-based violence spread in the Gaza Strip.
The meeting was interspersed with a set of questions, interventions, and enquiries put forward by the attendees, and answered by the meeting's facilitators.
