This morning, the first of May, “International Workers' Day”, the Labour Resource Centre, under the sponsorship of Pal-Think for Strategic Studies, launched an appeal calling for ending the division and achieving national unity, by distributing Palestinian flags bearing the words “On the first of May the workers want to end the division”
This activity comes within unconventional youth and worker initiatives that reject the division and call for restoring internal Palestinian national cohesion, within the framework of the project “Strengthening community partnership for Palestinian national reconciliation”, in partnership with the al-Karmel Association for Culture and Community Development, the Palestinian Working Woman Society, the Masar Association for Relief and Development, the al-Najd Developmental Forum and the Community Media Centre, under the supervision of the Pal-Think for Strategic Studies institution and with support from the Swiss government.
The flag-distribution activity was concentrated at the main Saraya junction in Gaza City, where dozens of Palestinian flags bearing slogans about ending the division were distributed to car drivers and passers-by. This event met with support and welcome from citizens, who in turn expressed their happiness at this step, which came in light of the great achievement represented by the signing of the reconciliation agreement in Cairo between the Fatah and Hamas movements.
In a comment of his on this event, Omar Shaban, director of Pal-Think for Strategic Studies, expressed his appreciation for the workers' efforts and his support for this step, which comes in an atmosphere fitting and coinciding with the reconciliation agreement signed by both the Fatah and Hamas movements in Cairo. He stressed that the workers' segment is the most harmed during the period of division that struck Palestinian society in 2007, since a large proportion of them have lost their source of livelihood and have come to live below the poverty line.
The various groups of Palestinian society look forward to such events and activities calling for strengthening reconciliation and ending the division bearing fruit in pressing the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and the Hamas government in Gaza to move forward with the reconciliation agreement and to rise above the points of disagreement that may appear in the future.
