Booklet: Testimonies on the state of the Palestinian division

The division of June 2007 struck a blow at the Palestinian cause and shamed the national struggle against occupation. Continuing despite every local and international effort, it halted a seven-decade national project and turned Palestinian energies inward.

The Palestinian division of June 2007 formed a blow to the Palestinian cause and represented a disgrace upon the Palestinian national-struggle movement against the occupation. This division, which has continued to this day despite all the local and international efforts, still affects negatively all walks of life: first, it stopped the project of the Palestinian national struggle, continuous for seven decades, and made Palestinian energy and capacities directed toward solving the internal Palestinian conflict instead of heading toward building and liberation.

Palestinian civil society did not stand neutral; rather it worked hard and perseveringly, and bore the bitterest, in raising the banner of national unity and demanding the division's end. At the level of Pal-Think for Strategic Studies, we hosted a number of sessions, non-publicly, since the division's start, with thirty figures of Palestinian society, and came out with a road map for Palestinian reconciliation published in the Palestinian newspapers in 2007 — that document counted as the first calling for the division's end according to a plan comprising solutions to the disputed tactical issues, and we continued our efforts working to achieve national reconciliation. We at Pal-Think likewise worked regularly with civil-society institutions, especially the small grassroots institutions, on unifying the issues and priorities of the Palestinian people — from our belief that reconciliation is a national matter par excellence that Palestinian society must undertake before the international community.

The recovery of national unity and the preservation of society are far more important than the unity of the political system, and keeping the feeling among the Palestinian parties at home and abroad that they belong to a single cause that preserves the existence of the Palestinian people as a unified political community bound by the unity of the past and the unity of the future.

In this project we worked to engage youth groups in documenting and achieving communal reconciliation through a set of initiatives in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, and we see that this book will be a testimony for history that we still reject the Palestinian division.
