Policy paper: A forward-looking vision for reforming the Palestinian political system

Political reform in Palestine is an urgent necessity for progress, development, political and social stability, and for confronting the internal and external challenges facing the Palestinian cause — the political system, born under complex conditions and occupation, needs deep reform.

Introduction:

Political reform in Palestine is an urgent necessity for achieving progress and development, guaranteeing political and social stability, and confronting the internal and external challenges facing the Palestinian cause. The Palestinian political system, founded amid complex historical circumstances and under the weight of the Israeli occupation, needs continuous development to be able to respond to the demands of the Palestinian people and their aspirations to freedom, dignity, and independence.

The importance of political reform also arises in the context of strengthening the political legitimacy of the Palestinian system. With the passage of time, the Palestinian citizen's trust in the political institutions has declined as problems accumulated: the absence of periodic elections and the erosion of legitimacies, the weakness of accountability and transparency, and the spread of favouritism and corruption in some areas.
